+29 Groceries are so expensive now it makes more sense to eat out, amirite?

by Kiera20 1 week ago

Do you live in an airport? $8 for chips? $20 for applesauce?? I shop at Aldi's and my grocery bill is about $300 - 350 per month at the most.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I live over an hour and a half away from a airport, those are actually the prices at my nearby grocery store! its an albertsons, so same thing as shaws, jewel osco etc In fact, i checked out the frozen foods section at my nearby CVS which notoriously up marks those kind of goods and the prices were similar, some even lower at the CVS. Maybe my store is just on crack? who knows

by Kiera20 1 week ago

Yeah, that's insane. Aldi and Walmart are the cheapest for groceries in my area. I can't believe you have to spend $750 - 800 a month on food, I'd move

by Anonymous 1 week ago

A box of cereal is easily 7.99 now too, for a regular one

tell me you failed elementary school math without telling me

I love how no one is refuting op and instead resorting to petty insults.

Syntax error

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I literally just looked up all the things you listed from my grocery store's website and the grand total was $8.91. You're so off base here. You're telling me you don't see anyway to shop for stuff and make the total cost less than $750 a month? Your trip to the store might cost you a couple hundred bucks, but that stuff should last you a couple weeks. Get bread, lunch meat, chicken, and rice. Get some frozen veggies. Look up simple recipes online, buy that stuff, and save it for later.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

so it's not that it's expensive, it's that you lack the knowledge to make and eat cheaper meals

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Even if u dont know how to cook, the is plenty of easy foods to make, and its a good thing to learn, its not rocket science, to boil some rice, and cook some meat, sauce u can buy finished, or as dry powder u can just mix up. Just look up some videos of how to cook simple things, or buy a cooking book, its a really good skill to have, u will save lots of money in the long run. And strawberries are just expensive, but u arnt going to need them for food everyday, they are more of a snack.

by trantowmicheal 1 week ago

I know and i dont really eat strawberries a lot but its just one of those things, among most fruits that has literally tripled in price in what seems like a blink of an eye. also i forgot to mention, i HATE doing dishes so the extra money i spend on takeout is well worth it if i dont have to get my hands dirty

by Kiera20 1 week ago

Well now the truth comes out that wasn't mentioned in the op. You can't cook and hate cleaning up. You're lazy and not even looking at the meat section. It probably takes as much time to cook as to go out, stand in line and wait for your food and go home, so you can't say you're more productive and making money in that time.

by Waylonstracke 1 week ago

Not Necessarily, in the past I would go grocery shopping weekly and would only eat out about half the week and I'd eat frozen or microwaveable food. I never cooked from scratch but buying groceries was always most economical. The opportunity cost of grocery shopping was always takeout for me and with grocery prices soaring as high as they are now it justifies switching to 100% takeout

by Kiera20 1 week ago

Other people have already done the maths for you, buy actual meat and veg, grains or pasta, do the cooking and food will last for much longer, meaning cheaper than the snack prices you keep referring to.

by Waylonstracke 1 week ago

Yeah this isn't an opinion. It's very much something that can be solved. OP should show receipts.

Coffee is in no way cheaper to get out anywhere. I'm not saying it's causing you to not afford a home but it's more expensive than making it at home. You get more food cooking at home. Ingredients to make tacos for example. Most of them you already have but even if not, it's like $15-20. When you go out to Taco Bell it's $10 for 3 taco combo. So it's "cheaper" but I can make 8-10 tacos at home for only 50 percent more.

by According-Dinner8395 1 week ago

We're a family of 3. It's about $175/week at the store but that'll also include things like toothpaste, TP, shampoo, whatever we need that week. We usually grab fast food or get takeout somewhere once a week. If I was just feeding myself that grocery bill would be far less. I also buy some things in bulk. I can get 40lb cases of chicken thighs for about $40. Got a 40lb case of chicken breasts for $75. Sure I've got to pay for it but those things last quite some time. Invested in a quality vacuum sealer last year and it has already paid for itself. But if we went by your numbers, say $25/day per person, that would be $75/day so $525/week. Your opinion isn't unpopular. It's just wrong.

by Jamir51 1 week ago

You do you. All I know is I've saved so much money just buying groceries and cooking at home. So much that the money left over each month sometimes gets me paranoid I forgot to pay a bill.

by Various-Emphasis-411 1 week ago

Nah bro you shopping at the wrong store if it actually cost that much. Keep eating out if you want but it's significantly more expensive to do so, I don't care what you say

by Kleinellen 1 week ago

Everything you listed that went up in price are snack items. Gotta cut out that avocado toast

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The examples u are giving, arnt that more snacks than food? And also 20 dollars for lunch? Thats really expensive, thats more than I spend on food in a day. U complain that food is expensive, but im sure u can buy some rice, maybe some meat, and some sauce, for 20 dollars, or maybe more, if u chose some bigger sized meat, but then u will have enough for more than 1 day. Yesterday I made food for about 10 dollars, and I have enough for today as well, so that 5 dollars a day, thats not much. On the other side, a meal at least here, can easily cost way more, a pizza, thats easily 15 to 20 dollars, and way more unhealthy. So unless u are living in a country, that has very expensive groceries, and somehow very cheap food u can buy, then it makes no sense. Side note, how can groceries get way more expensive, but takeout havnt?

by trantowmicheal 1 week ago

also i have a bit of an all or nothing mentality when it comes to it, if im gonna pay 500 dollars a month for groceries that i don't even want/want to cook, i might as well spend 600 and just get chipotle everyday

by Kiera20 1 week ago

I dont have an exact number, but I dont pay anywhere near 500 dollars a month for groceries, its maybe 250 dollars at most. If u dont really know how to cook, then u cant really say its cheaper or makes more sense to eat out. What u are talking about, sounds more like u just dont want to, so eating out is just the only option.

by trantowmicheal 1 week ago

I'm genuinely baffled by OP's grocery budget My grocery budget is like 100-150 for two people

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I have no idea what is going on with prices at albertsons! like whole foods and trader joes are literally cheaper at this time

by Kiera20 1 week ago

25 percent since 2020 explains why i think "why does this item that was 5 dollars a few years ago cost 12 now"

by Kiera20 1 week ago

I can see prices being exhorbitant in your area. Maybe there's another place you can shop? Surely this is one of the higher end stores, or perhaps the owners valuate the prices based on the neighborhood. Maybe even, you can find coupons for some items. It might be an extra bit of time, but at least it will get you some savings... Maybe. At any rate, if you can still eat everyday in either case, good for you.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Costco sells rotisserie chickens for 5 dollars. Hell most grocery stores sell them for under 10. That's 2 or 3 meals alone. Your unpopular opinion really is you dont think it's worth the time to cook or shop correctly.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Just live off Costco rotisserie chickens

by joshua60 1 week ago

Where?

by No-Possible 1 week ago

Sounds like you live in the US, in the UK you can buy a weeks worth of groceries for two at £50 ($62)

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Don't encourage this guy he's just an idiot

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Maybe come up with a refute instead of resorting to lame insults.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

A refute? For saying eating takeout every day is cheaper than cooking at home? I don't think I'll waste my time.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Trolling? Bro go get a coffee and a cigarette. You're the troll

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This may be to complex of a concept for you to understand so I can get why you won't know this but I'm actually an entirely different person. But nice job pulling up the "you have an alt account" card.

Then you're just a putz white knighting for an idiot. Not sure why you've gotten so upset but all I have to say is lol again
