Took a smell test when I got onto my local fire department

I have no sense of smell, other than greatly diminishing my ability to taste, I don't notice it.
by Anonymous1 week ago
My brother has been anosmic since birth but has perfectly acceptable food tastes. I've always wondered if the idea that it diminishes your ability to taste was just an urban myth or if he genuinely has a lower sensitivity. If he did, how would he or anyone else know, really?
by Anonymous1 week ago
well, I used to be a chef, so being able to taste was very important to me. now I have to get my wife to taste the final product. I have enough skill that I can make things well, but sometimes they need final tweaking and I cant tell.
by Anonymous1 week ago
Unlucky dude, probably the worst profession for that to happen.
by Anonymous1 week ago
I still get sweet, sour, salty etc, but actual flavors are very muted.
by Anonymous1 week ago
I had this happen to me once? I smelled a weird chemical smell just walking into a store. Nothing weird. And then i could not taste anything beyond what you just described too a year or two for it to come back to normal… i probably should have gone to he doctor or something…
by Estrella961 week ago
Drug sniffing dog is probably second worst profession for this ailment.
by Anonymous1 week ago
That's valid.
by Anonymous1 week ago
it is known that smell influences the taste of things. you can change how something tastes by giving it a different smell. It's not 100% necessary, but it does have an impact.
by Anonymous1 week ago
I'm gaining back my sense of smell, it does make food taste different. I would make a lot of Asian food because I could actually taste it unlike most general American food.
by Anonymous1 week ago
If he was anosmic from birth he spend his entire life, his taste developed without smell. While taste strongly relies on smell, it can function partially without it.

We can fix your hearing and vision.

If we relied on smell as much as most animals do, there would probably be methods or devices to fix it.

That's it. And what do you know…the folks conducting the tests can sell you the cure.

I have to get sight, hearing, smell, and touch tested every year for work. The only thing they don't care about is taste, I guess
by Anonymous1 week ago
What industry is that?
by No_Beginning67611 week ago
Yes we do. Just because you haven't had one doesn't mean they don't exist.

I'd like to take one. For some fkn reason Basil smells/tastes like black liquorice since Covid and I don't like it 😒
by Anonymous1 week ago
All coffee smells like tuna fish to me now. It's awful.
by Anonymous1 week ago
I have noticed that too but before covid.

My brother had a smell test done. He hit his head really hard and lost that sense completely. He says he can make things taste like pepperoni pizza if he thinks about it while eating lol.
by Connect_Command1 week ago
Fun fact. I work in natural gas and the people who are responsible for making sure the gas is readily detected by smell, do have to take a yearly smell test.
by vickyhowell1 week ago
Cool!
by Anonymous1 week ago
It's really a matter of taste.

There are smell tests. Neuropsychologists use scratch and sniff cards. Issues with smell are an early symptom of Parkinson's.
by Icy-Round1 week ago
Consider this: the human race had to spend thousands of generations pretending not to be able to smell one another. I reckon we just aren't in the habit of valuing sense of smell at the same level as eyesight
by Anonymous1 week ago
I think I pass the smell test every time I get on the metro in the evening.

I took a smell test as part of my participation in the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative research study.
by Anonymous1 week ago
Smell doesn't interfere significantly with your daily perception. Some don't even notice it's gone once it is
by Anonymous1 week ago
So few could pass the sniff test. Tragic, really.

My semi-worn clothes even get a smell test.
by Anonymous1 week ago
I'd fail. When I was a very young child, my mom would cram Vick's VapoRub inside my nostrils every night "as a precaution." Against what, I have no idea. That happened from as far back as I remember until 8th grade. I can't smell anything; not the coffee aisle in the grocery store, not a candle store, not pot, not perfume/cologne, not food cooking…nothing.

So, what was the story? You must have spoken to a doctor by now? This must affect your sense of taste as well, because so much of what we taste is informed by smell?
by Substantial_Meet1 week ago
Sure we do and it's a validated scientifically and is essentially a kids game — a 40-item "scratch and sniff" test. UPSIT smell test

Because smell isn't typically necessary for everyday life, productivity, and safety. Also noted by how little is done to try to fix poor sense of smell.

Can't fix a broken smeller. It doesn't really impact safety as much as the other two. *shrug*

It's called Bath and Body Works. It's how we found out my husband's sense of smell is terrible. He couldn't figure out why I kept smelling so many things that didn't smell.
by Anonymous1 week ago
Yes you do. It's part of some cranial Nerve tests. Although usually my doctor skips that part she did it once.
by Anonymous1 week ago
We do have smell tests. "Smell test" is even an English idiom.
