+37 In our globalised world, tourism is a rip-off and waste of time, amirite?

Nah. Physically experiencing things still matters, and telling someone that agreed to the costs that it's a rip-off is not up to you.

Have you like, actually traveled much? Because this hasn't been my experience at all. Like yeah I did get pizza in India more than once, but I also got to try a lot of local traditional foods. The fact that western stuff exists in other places doesn't mean their culture has totally disappeared.

OP, do you fly in for a few days or longer term? Do you explore and go off the beaten path at all? I've traveled extensively and I do think it is kind of overrated...but not because there might be a Starbucks next to my hotel (more because the whole thing trends toward a kind of consumerism to me). Culture is so deep that even the current level of globalization just puts a little dent in things. And there is so much variation even between Tokyo and Kyoto, to use one of your examples. There's also something to be said for being the one who is the outsider. The power dynamic shift and requirement that you become the learner. Also, what do you mean about the positive attitude? Because you're not annoying people being a tourist?

Idk man, I travel to get as far as possible from my daily life / work. That works best for me, when I'm at other side of the world.

The ease of travel have made international hotspots and "must visit" locations badly overcrowded. Just try and visit the Louvre Museum in Paris. No tourist comes here to NOT try to take a selfie with the Mona Lisa painting. The result is absolute bedlam everyday in the gallery with this small piece of art. If you just want to see it, it's trivial on any phone.

The thing you miss doing that is the smells. Good or bad. Otherwise yeah, YouTube tourism has a rightful place.

Tourism isn't just about culture. Some people travel for the weather, beaches, mountains and other landscapes/ecosystems, historical landmarks, local events etc...

I agree with you. I have travelled for work for 40 years and don't really see the point of travelling on my own time and money.
