+24 Don't talk about the WNBA players' revenue sharing if you don't know that the WNBA can't turn a profit. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If the WNBA players want profit sharing, they would owe the owners money at the end of the year.

by wilhelminebode 1 week ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the NBA has to cut a couple million dollar check every year because the WNBA has never made a profit

by Miserable_Fruit9547 1 week ago

If only the god damn men could embrace it and start watching WNBA. They're so misogynistic that they only watch the best of the best of the men. All the women are already watching WNBA, right? Right??

by Anonymous 1 week ago

so many women want the WNBA players to be paid comparable to NBA players, but they arent willing to goto, or even watch, the games to support them.

by Clear_Operation 1 week ago

I literally explained why the WNBA players don't make as much money and I was told by several people. Well that's just an old way of thinking like no, it's not

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Can't we just compel women to buy season tickets and merchandise from the WMBA? We can also ban women from entering a MBA game and just redirect them to the WMBA games.

by Mckennahackett 1 week ago

Most women don't like sports, SHOCKING! Most men don't like rom coms.

by No_Afternoon5438 1 week ago

Men will at last support their wives and watch a rom com though.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yo, I watch the WNBA.. I literally don't know a single thing about it...I couldn't tell you teams or players...it's just kinda super boring.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

What I read: "Yo I watch religiously, and it's super boring. Personally I just dig the torture" lol

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Now here's a true supporter to the cause.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Someone's gotta watch it..I'll jump on that grenade.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Caitlin Clark She is literally the only chance the WNBA has at making it, like at all. She is fun to watch. She has a good IQ regarding basketball and knows how to shoot super well.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Crazy enough, if people actually watch they may see some players who are as good or better than CC.

by Bjones 1 week ago

Then... why do you watch it? If you can't remember a team name, it doesn't sound like you do

by Specific-Shame 1 week ago

I watch occasionally because it's on and I love basketball, but it really is a terrible TV product.

by qbotsford 1 week ago

I don't really want to get into an argument about it, but bad fundamentals are the most frustrating thing about watching the WNBA for me. Compared to the NBA pros, their dribbling, shooting, passing, on and off ball defense, and boxing out are terrible. Not sure what other "techniques" these coaches of yours are talking about, but it sounds like just basic platitudes to not be seen as sexist.

by qbotsford 1 week ago

Bill Burr has a good bit about this

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Ya I admittedly stole it from him. One of the greatest minds of our time 😁

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't watch any sports, I'm equal that way

by shane69 1 week ago

15 million seems a lot lower than whatever number I had in my head, TIL

by Brennondurgan 1 week ago

That's higher than what it used to be. It was 12 million for a few years.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Well I mean that's like how much they'd pay a male player for an average contract they just had to hire one less guy that year to get a whole women's league.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Bill Burr has a great rant about this.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Real talk - are we seeing a change to viability? I literally know nothing about the league but I do see Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese - 50% of all people are Women. And these two Women have excelled and competed at a high level in college and now are poised to compete as pros.

by AdventurousGrab 1 week ago

My big thing is when, mostly women, try to argue that the WNBA should make more and I ask if they have ever been to a game, bought a jersey, or even watched a game on tv and the answer to all three questions is no.

by Joel15 1 week ago

Even better is when you ask those same women if they have a men's NBA jersey or been to a game, and 90% of the time the answer is "yes"

by Different-Visual5237 1 week ago

Are you asking lesbians or just straight chicks?

by Objective-Signal4092 1 week ago

Harsh but fair question

by Anonymous 1 week ago

For the league to make money there would have to be a lot of lesbians.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Look I ain't gay but I'm watching every major male sport

by FondantZestyclose505 1 week ago

I don't think it matters. The WNBA may serve as an entry point for these women for the sport and eventually they go to the NBA. But the NBA can't reach them alone.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

ill be surprised if they see above a 10% ticket sale bump even at the beginning. my guess is that they go back to regular obscurity by midseason, maybe get a tiny bump if the Fever make it to the championship

by Lost-Marionberry3784 1 week ago

We don't know, it could be (and add Paige in next year) but we've seen highly touted players enter the league before (Brittany Griner, Diana taurasi, Becky Hammond ect.) and it hasn't moved the needle.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Caitlin Clarke, and to a lesser extent this entire draft class, could potentially revolutionize the WNBA. Clarke's games broke records for March madness. Her jersey sold out. She signed a 20 million dollar shoe deal. It's going to take work and aggressive marketing but Clarke already has a big following of people who like watching her play

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It just doesn't matter. People are acting like she has invented the WNBA. She hasn't, it's been around for a long time. The country has shown over that long time that there is little interest in the WNBA, one player is not changing that.

by luettgenboyd 1 week ago

You're probably right but you're way too confident. She just drew bigger ratings than the NBA finals.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree with that assessment. I really do think it's cool the attention she brought to the sport and female athletes, I just don't see it being sustainable. It was awesome and fun, but I can't see any way it suddenly created 100s of thousands of WNBA fans where so few existed before. We're talking about a league that was founded the same year as MLS, and it barely has a quarter of the attendance and they had David freaking Beckham and a worldwide popular sport.

by luettgenboyd 1 week ago

You are a person who lives in society... are you witnessing an uptick in people going "did you catch that WNBA game last night?"

by Anonymous 1 week ago

A little bit, but only as related to NCAAWB

by AdventurousGrab 1 week ago

Nope, but you do hear about college basketball. This draft class might move the needle though.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Is it really that even of males and females in the world? That is kinda crazy haha

by Specific-Shame 1 week ago

It's a tax write off for the NBA

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Are you suggesting companies purposely fund ventures that lose money in order to save money on taxes

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Lol good luck with that

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Approx 35 million a year by best estimates

by Different-Visual5237 1 week ago

Dunks make bucks. But they have really great fundamentals!

by WoodpeckerAlarmed 1 week ago

True, the thing is though profitability isn't the only measure of success for sports leagues. Plenty of unprofitable male supports out there as well. Still need them though.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

"Ante up ladies" "here's a bill for negative 30 million dollars"

by Vanessakoss 1 week ago

Well they don't really want profit sharing they want income sharing two completely different concepts. The wbna makes income it's just not profitable.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The NBA literally pays for the WNBA. They just don't have the numbers to support themselves

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yes but it's much easier to blame men who watch sports with male athletes in them.

by gunner20 1 week ago

The right question is how many women watch the NBA. The WNBA may have been an entry point for them

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It would be the reverse. Basketball arenas are 35+ percent women.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Bill Burr is so funny and actually makes good points.

by geraldcole 1 week ago

he does a good job being centrist as well you can tell its a bit forced but its always good to keep personal opinions out of comedy to be able to read all parts of a situation and form the funniest joke around it. he's one of the few i've seen live multiple times

by Anonymous 1 week ago

One popular player comes along who everyone will forget about in a year and then the cycle will repeat when it happens again.

by Effective-File-9084 1 week ago

Yup. And the same exact people raged on TV and in articles about inequality and pay gap for clicks while disregarding the basic economics of the sport.

by Effective-File-9084 1 week ago

Agreed. You can't force people to watch and enjoy something. Men like sports. The majority of sports fans are men. Men will more likely watch the games that involve their gender. NBA makes tons of money. The WNBA doesn't bring in the fan base the NBA does, and so they don't generate that same level revenue. We can talk all day long about how this is founded in a human history's worth of gender issues, but at the end of the day you can't force people to watch something. If people genuinely believe that the WNBA players deserve more pay, then support them! Go watch a game, share their highlights, buy merch, be a fan.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Gender?! I hardly know her!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

huh?

by FarOwl 1 week ago

oh Zoolander haha

by FarOwl 1 week ago

Are you..... serious? I just told you.....

by gunner20 1 week ago

People will watch sports as long as they're good at it. It's not always about gender. Look at how many people watch women's tennis. Women's sports in the olympics. It's genuinely entertaining to watch those matches. WNBA is not fun to watch frankly.

by Past-Host 1 week ago

Yep. No one wants to watch the WNBA because it's not even the second best basketball product you can watch in the US. It probably isn't even the third. NBA NCAA/All college men's teams Good high school teams WNBA No one wants to watch that and they certainly wouldn't pay to see it. It's a charity.

by Big_Truth970 1 week ago

Idk if you're including G league in NBA or not, but highlights from some of those games are electric as well.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Oh yeah basically every men's league above junior high school basketball is better than the WNBA. It's just not a good product at all.

by Big_Truth970 1 week ago

You can put the NCAA women's tournament above the WNBA too.

by Beginning-Bit 1 week ago

I wouldn't watch g league over WNBA. They just people out there shooting whenever they touch the ball. Understandable but I don't want to watch it

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Nah WNBA over G League. I have never met anyone who watches G League but have met lots who watch WNBA.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Oddly, women's college ball is somehow more popular than the WNBA.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't consider that odd at all, tbh The star players don't sell the WNBA at all (we'll see if Caitlin Clark changes this), and the university brands are wayy bigger than WNBA teams. This is how every sport outside of the major ones work. College rugby, lacrosse, track and field, etc. are all more popular than the professional alternatives.

by Automatic-Produce 1 week ago

the olympics or World Cup events are harder to judge for popularity of sports compared to regular season non championship games. soccer is a perfect example of this where few care in America in particular unless its a World Cup or olympic game

by Lost-Marionberry3784 1 week ago

yeah and the funniest part is that the women who say this refuse to watch the wnba

by Rippinmax 1 week ago

This! It gets me mad. They same women will complain that men won't change on certain ways, but the women refuse to live up to their own standard.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's not easy to watch the WNBA

by Qerdman 1 week ago

They tend to shoot too much with their arms while men use their wrists more is the biggest difference I see. They shoot like I had to in middle school when I had less strength...with a smaller ball.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't blame them, really.

by alyciaheidenrei 1 week ago

Its not necessarily just about gender but the main factor being entertainment. The nba has literal freaks of nature doing things that 99.9% of the population cant do while the wnba obviously has very athletically gifted women but the game is just not as explosive as the men. Ronda Rousey was one of the biggest draws at one point in time for the UFC. I'd argue that the MMA fanbase is very heavily male populated even compared to other sports but Ronda was destroying every women and it was entertaining to watch a human be so dominant over her competition. Women in tennis are also very popular despite Serena Williams herself saying that she would lose to the professional male players. IMO, its very sport dependent and unfortunately, the wnba will always be a hard product to sell because there is a direct comparison to the nba.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Honestly, with Kamilla Cardoso being drafted I just might.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Share their highlights…. Lol

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I wonder how they actually make a better product though like what can they realistically do because the NBA is so far ahead as the pinnacle of pro hoops

by Diligent_Picture8682 1 week ago

They could lower the rim so they could dunk, but they don't want to do that. WNBA is slower NBA without the dunks.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Strange. They already shifted the 3 point line if I'm right.

by Subject_Ad 1 week ago

Ball is a different size too.I get that lowering the rim 6 inches will take some adjustments to get used to, but so far they've done nothing and they're all out of ideas.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

A few of them could start dating Kardashians???

by Objective-Signal4092 1 week ago

The biggest issue with your argument is how much revenue women's basketball in particular generates overseas.

by Qerdman 1 week ago

It doesn't generate much money overseas, it's just a proxy pissing contest between rich oil/gas tycoons that own sports teams.. so rich team owners will overpay players so they can get bragging rights when their team beats the team of some other rich asshole

by Different-Visual5237 1 week ago

Women are also more likely to watch the NBA than WNBA. For example, my fiance watches around 120 NBA games per year, but she has never seen nor have any interest in watching a WNBA game.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If you go to basketball games, a significant percentage of people going are women, so its not just a men like this, women like that thing. I'm saying like 35+ percent.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If everyone bitching about it would go to WNBA games and watch them on tv, the problem would solve itself.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yep. I've always said this. The great ones get paid. Caitlin Clark will not lack money, it just won't be through the WNBA. Just like Candace Parker has plenty of money from endorsements. But really, they make all of their money playing overseas. Europe loves women's basketball and pays extremely well

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Russia pays them incredibly well. That's why Griner was there. Even though every one else with a brain opted out because of the war and told her not to go. I think it's actually due to gambling that the money is so much. I haven't done research, so I can't say for sure, that's just what I've heard said, so don't take my word for it

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Caitlin might make the WNBA "Profit" for the first time ever. 1997-2024 is a LONG TIME to NOT Profit once! Not many businesses can brag about that.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The same people saying they should make more should probably attend WNBA games.....so they can make NBA money.

by Historical-Cut-563 1 week ago

whose job is it to go see wnba games

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm just going to say it - where are the women who say they need to support other women at? Clearly not at WNBA games.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Women say they want to support other women, but they hardly ever do, and most of the women that do are only doing for their own benefit, and not for the benefit of women in general.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

For the most part, women spend more time trying to tear one another down than supporting one another. I've seen it in my career field some. It's terrible how back stabbing they can be to one another.

by Rosenbaummax 1 week ago

I tried searching for the WNBA's profit yesterday. All I got were articles talking about revenue. People don't like to talk about the WNBA's profit I guess.

by Subject_Ad 1 week ago

Yes I saw the Bill Burr clip too

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Brought to you by the people who think colleges lose money on their football programs.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It'll be interesting to see how this changes in the future, considering that ESPN is not going to let anyone forget about the existence of Caitlyn Clark. It's like the female equivalent of lebron being drafted by the Cavs.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Lower the net so they can dunk. It'll make it more entertaining therefore more eyeballs.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Who tf watches the WNBA?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If all those feminists who complain about "equal pay equal play" would actually watch some games, then WNBA might make a profit Seriously, most of the WNBA audience is men. Most of us just wanna watch sports no matter whos playing.

by Legitimate-Tear 1 week ago

if it makes you feel better, the women's soccer team always made more than the men did and the women's team was unhappy about that too

by Vanessakoss 1 week ago

They did for a couple of years but it shifted back to men's making more again after.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Norman Rockwell guy standing up I don't care about athlete pay

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Just because they haven't yet doesn't mean they can't. The Caitlin Clark effect has been unreal. That isn't an argument for profit sharing but acting like they aren't able to turn a profit is ridiculous. The NBA was in a very similar situation for many years.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

real.

by Rippinmax 1 week ago

bill burr has a great bit about the WNBA and women wanting women in sports and stuff but then they refuse to support the WNBA. even women's soccer isnt that popular except during the world cup or olympics

by Lost-Marionberry3784 1 week ago

They attach Caitlin Clark's salary and compare it to the NBA's number one draft pick and act like she's being scammed. Yet she's making over $70k a year, that's a pretty good salary for a 22 year old. How many other college grads land that money? You have ppl who've worked decades of their lives never even hit that.

by Fit-Foundation 1 week ago

They've not turned a profit in their entire existence.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

WNBA players makes more than me and almost all of them got their college education paid for

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If you are the best at your field you better get more than 77k a year. For her case that isn't possible because the wbna are losing money.

by xyost 1 week ago

If anything it's women's fault that the WNBA and other female sports leagues aren't making money or popular.

by DependentAddition 1 week ago

Men can watch women's sports too you know.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

WNBA is a boring game played by mostly unattractive women. Call me when trans players take over…. Shouldn't be long now.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

based

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't know what's going on with the WNBA, but the reason people watch sporting events en masse is because you are watching the worlds GREATEST athletes/skilled players compete at the highest level. This is simply never going to be the case with women's sports.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

On one end I agree, on the other end I would bet the question of why that is the dynamic. If it's because women who want to join the NBA aren't as skilled and entertaining then sure. However, there could be a dynamic diff. You don't hype the wmba, less profit, tell women if they want more pay they need more profit. Rinse and repeat.

by Basic_Grape 1 week ago

Legit I didn't know they don't turn a profit! Why is it is it because of ticket sales or something is too expensive? Tbf tho I also didn't know they were asking for profit sharing and I also don't watch sports (except sometimes Olympics or something special event) so ig that's why i did not know those stuff lol

by ProductUnlucky 1 week ago

Objectively, it's unpopular and people find it to be boring. Overseas leagues are solvent.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

how is this an unpopular opinion lol. id argue this is the msot popular opinion about WNBA salary

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Don't talk about the WNBA players revenue sharing I'd you don't analyze why men think it's funny to make fun of women athletes

by demariobergstro 1 week ago

So many people don't understand sports is entertainment. It's not a job where you provide a service and can demand a higher income. Their wage is solely decided upon how much revenue the team makes. People who argue otherwise are brainless and know nothing about the industry nor simple economics.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Please tell this to the actual WNBA players who think they're making smart points when they mention they just want profit sharing but not exact salaries as NBA players. Lots of stupid.

by CarefulTeaching9504 1 week ago

The wnba is still a young org, the nba also wasnt profitable in the beginning. In time especially with women like Caitlin Clark it will be profitable

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Young? It's a week short of 28 years.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I think the real unpopular opinion is the one where people think they should make more money.

by virgiedaugherty 1 week ago

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The pay is appropriate for the product. Some products aren't worth what other products are worth. What's the "generationally great" CrossFit competitor make? Probably jack. Why? Because nobody cares about that product.

by Kade57 1 week ago

She's getting 8 figures from Nike...way more than most male pro athletes

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yes she will be fine but that's not the point of the conversation. The point is her WNBA salary.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Her WNBA role enables the Nike sponsorship. She will be playing those WNBA games in her Nike shoes, for example... essentially a Nike rep in the WNBA. So I look at her Nike money as part of her total comp. It's similar to how most PGA pros make more from sponsors than from PGA. But the sponsors wouldn't be there at all if not for the measly paying PGA role

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is honestly just more disingenuous framing. Why do you think people are only on " they shouldn't be paid more" or "they should be paid the same as the men"m that's most demonstrably not true.

by Qerdman 1 week ago

Wages have to be paid out from somewhere. For the wnba, if it is making a loss, then naturally, wages should go down.

by Anonymous 1 week ago
