They bring in billions in revenue why wouldn't they deserve their pay? Everyone makes it into a "whose greater for society" debate but the fact is they're helping in bringing spectators that pay for their "unfair high salaries". It's a totally separate conversation on what role is more important in society than it is talking about raw salaries.

And what does that revenue do? Pretty sure the Lakers aren't buying me a house. An education will. LeBron isn't putting my kid through college. Sure. Sports are a great diversion for people that watch them. But just saying "they deserve the pay because they take it in" is incredibly short sighted. LeBron is useless. A teacher, not useless.

True, but cities don't tax their citizens and spend billions of dollars building stadiums to attract singers and musicians to play in their city. This routinely happens with sport teams. The owners of these teams get tax breaks and forgiveness as well as billions in handouts which the local taxpayers wind up paying for. That's simply not fair.

The truth is most athletes get paid based on how much money they generate and that's based on a combination of how good they are and how many people want to watch them. Talking about how "deserving" they are is utterly pointless and is done by people who are mad about how much some athletes make. It isn't the best MMA fighters who get paid the most, it's the ones who bring in the most viewers. Now, your ability to bring in viewers correlates quite highly with your skill but it isn't 1:1. It's why celebrity boxing matches make a lot of money, normally people pay to watch skill and athleticism but with sufficient popularity you can make up for a lack of those and bring in just as many viewers to pay to watch you. A celebrity boxer getting paid $1m to fight might be "less deserving" than a pro boxer getting the same in some people's eyes but it doesn't matter
