This made me snort in bed well done

by Scary_Environment 1 week ago

Well pagers existed before texting. And you had to wait in suspense if someone ever called you back. Also, misinterpretations I see as lessons on how to improve how you communicate to others.

by Marleefarrell 1 week ago

Pagers still exist but pretty much only doctors use them. But whenever I think about pagers I think about those giant rotary phones growing up and then I think about the time before phones. Like you had to write letters to people. And I think about all the people that just straight up died in the woods traversing from one village to another and nobody knows what happened. And what if the mailman gets killed or eaten by a bear? All that correspondence lost. I wonder how many people's lives got ruined by a piece of mail that took months to deliver never arriving.

by Dangerous_Fuel7428 1 week ago

Anyone else remember the apps that worked like walkie talkies? Lol that lasted about a week.

by javon91 1 week ago

I don't remember that one but I remember Vine, which I think existed for maybe a year at most

by Marleefarrell 1 week ago

I can talk to multiple people at once and have a wide variety of conversations while still going about my day if I am texting. If someone calls me, my attention now has to be focused 100% on the call. I have friends that never text back but always call when im in the middle of something. I dont mind talking on the phone if something needs answered right away. Calling to me is rude. I don't always have time to talk or im in public and dont want to have a loud phone conversation where I can barely understand anything youre saying in the first place because the reception is bad. Text me first at least if you need to call.

by Colelupe 1 week ago

You would have to give someone 100% focus?! The horror! Anything but that!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Reserved for in person. Phone is just…inefficient. You don't get the depth of face to face. L

by Jolly-Librarian9246 1 week ago

I have to do that whenever i am required to do so not an option. Its really bad

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yes. And I'm busy. Why do I have to drop everything I'm doing because they want to talk on the phone? I just don't answer and text them back. Simple. Done. It's their choice now if they still want to talk.

by Colelupe 1 week ago

Ironic. Me, me, me, right? My time, my attention, me busy, my life! Does the other person not equally give 100% of their focus if they deem you worthy of having a phone call? It's a respect thing.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah the person calling constantly and refusing to text is only thinking about themselves. God forbid people have busy lives and can't spend 20 minutes on the phone in the middle of the day. It's a respect thing. The respectful thing is texting first and asking if you're available for a call or if another time works better.

by Colelupe 1 week ago

Yeah, sorry you're not the center of the world and other people are trying to talk to me simultaneously.

by Aggressive-File5731 1 week ago

Lol says you little man with main character syndrome.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

??

by Aggressive-File5731 1 week ago

So sorry. Meant little boy.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Feel like you're the one with the main character syndrome that you think I'm obliged to give you 100% of my attention.

by Aggressive-File5731 1 week ago

Yeah people are busy man.

by Aggressive-File5731 1 week ago

Not 16 year old you who sits on the couch picking their belly button lint while watching Twitch streams and eating chips

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Right? lol this is a weird but unsurprising response in 2024

by London01 1 week ago

where I can barely understand anything youre saying in the first place because the reception is bad. That's the toy cellphone's fault.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Call someone then, you dont need a land line to call someone

by TableOk 1 week ago

I mean I get the sentiment you're going for, but I think this is more about you. You don't HAVE to respond to people right away. You don't HAVE to sit there and wait for a reply. The whole point of a text is sending a message to someone that they can reply to when they have time. Maybe try distancing yourself from your phone when you're in one of these convos. Just check it when you want.

by Shoddy_Tradition 1 week ago

Older than you. I just hate my phone/constant contact at this point.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I like texting because people's voices annoy me. The only downfall with texting is conveying things sometimes.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

this generation is just socially awkward and prefers texting (me lmao)

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I use texting for quick communication and sharing memes usually. I prefer irl for real conversations. Me and my main friend group don't even use our group chat that much since we'd rather just talk on discord or IRL. So we just use it for planning hangouts and quick communication.

by mbecker 1 week ago

I've seen texting mess people up, "I've got so many messages" "I speak to so many people" then goes to "I checked how quickly they responded and that tells how strong the relationship is" It happens, it can be another source of anxiety I feel it's socially necessary as a teenager but then loses necessity when you've got transport and skype

by cristantwon 1 week ago

When I was 21, in the 80s, I would have loved texting. I had a phone phobia and always worried that I was calling someone at an inconvenient time. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. The current technology works to my strengths

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I hate when ppl call me especially for something they couldn't just texted me

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I hate phones period. Talking or texting. It all sucks.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I hate texting too, I know there are lots of great functional uses for it but I hate being interrupted 40x a day rather than a 5-10 minute phone call. I know I can call but most people my age hate getting calls so I don't want to be that guy.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If someone has a question for you and the answer is it depends. I don't want to text back and forth. I'm just going to talk on the phone about it.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yea, if I'm texting an indecisive person, I'll also switch to a call pretty soon. I was just saying there is no need to feel interrupted 40x a day.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

How would landlines make a difference? What about non-smart phones? It was inconvenient to text on those phones since they had a traditional keypad and you usually had to press each button multiple times to get each letter you wanted.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Non-smart phones have SMS. The 3310 and many phones before that could text.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yes, I didn't say they didn't have SMS, but that wasn't my point. My point was that it was inconvenient to text on those phones because you'd often have to press the buttons multiple times for each letter you wanted.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

T9 was efficient

by Anonymous 1 week ago

At first. But we all learned to text without looking and that was more convenient.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

same, have always had this problem. would much rather just talk for 30 mins on the phone and thats it

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree with you, I'd rather talk on thr phone or video chat. I tend to send voice messages instead of text

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I tend to send voice messages instead of text This sounds to me like the worst of all worlds.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You don't have to wait for the person to respond. It's not like a real life conversation. You just respond when you can. If there's something actually important, then you call. Also, the tone thing just seems like a lack of understanding of how to write in general. It's quite easy to tell the tone of a text from someone you know and get the point across in your own

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I just say basic stuff. Sometimes show them something. But thats it.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

As someone who just turned 46 I was great at managing phone conversations and miss the extra emotional information conveyed by tone of voice. Didn't grow up doing this! Also I love closure and every text convo feels like this dribble that's never truly over, I can't always gauge the level of urgency and it's maddening!!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Agreed. I much prefer talking over the phone than texting. Even catching up with an old friend is better over the phone. I still text, but only very few people. If it's more than a 5-10 minute conversation, I prefer calls.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

There are plenty of people like you. I'm not one of them lol. I had a friend that would text me: "hey. whats up" next text: "you busy?" followed immediately by my phone ringing. And every time, he never had anything to say, just wanted to talk. So annoying lol.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I hate texting too - but only on phone. On a pc keyboard I can write 150 words per minute, but I usually mistype everything on phone. I have a few friends and they're living pretty far, but I would rather have a 2 hour phone call with them every week instead of texting them every day. Texting feels impersonal to me, and you can even just ditch a message and answer it later (which most people do IMO), but most of the time when they can't answer the phone they usually send a text message about it or they just call me later. The most annoying thing people can do to me is when I call them they hang up and send a text message like "hey, what's up?". Man if I wanted to text you I would've done so. Although there are some cases and conversations where texting can be ok like while working, or doing anything requires focus.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I prefer it. Talking on phone is so awkward and ppl mumble and whisper, and have background noise and use speaker so all you hear is waawaawaaa like Charlie Browns teacher, it's so annoying

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I have an emoji at the end of most texts I send to help convey tone 😁

by myles29 1 week ago

This isn't unpopular.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

As an awkward nerd myself, I agree. Sometimes it's just easier to convey information verbally.

by NeedleworkerWest8584 1 week ago

Mfs will say they can't properly use tone in text, but refuse to ever use emojis

by Zachariah82 1 week ago

I do not like how text msgs have turned into immediate response type conversations. It's a msg you don't have to respond immediately.

by Frequent_Antelope 1 week ago

Same, I hate calls too. Just leave me alone

by kaleullrich 1 week ago

I can understand why some people hate texting. But everything you listed is why I prefer texting. I hate the immediacy of calls. I need time to think and get my tone/words right. I hate needing to be instantly available to someone. Why can't I answer when I have time? I hate that I'm on the phone and can't do something else, I feel like I'm being held hostage. The conversation never needs to be officially over. With some of my friends, I can pick up in a week, a month, a year… if it's something you need immediately, you can still call! I'm a mid-aged millennial (34F)… I grew up with only landlines and I loved when we were detached from phone calls.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I cant get my tone across properly when talking. Also i like written records

by colleenwalker 1 week ago

The reason they prefer twxting is bc theyre so dumb that tone doesnt matter. But for some people they might just get anxiety talking on the phone, ya never know

by beahangiovanna 1 week ago

I just hate being left on read

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Use emojis!

by FarAmount7927 1 week ago

💤 🥱 😴

by Anonymous 1 week ago

On the other end, calls feel way too formal. To me, at least. Texting is a very specific art. Tone takes forever to understand how to convey properly, and oftentimes is just stating plainly that it's supposed to be read in x tone. But sometimes it's just rewording your sentence in a manner that can't be misinterpreted. For example, I used lots of words I wouldn't normally use in an attempt to make this paragraph sound like something out of a lecture hall. To that, I think I partially failed; but I think a overall neutral tone has been established

by Anonymous 1 week ago

My issue is people want to talk when you call, tell me what you want to say and then hang up and I'd prefer calling too.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I understand your argument but I don't agree me personally, if I ever say anything I regret it at least feels better knowing for those moment I don't jave to talk to said person and I also feel comfortable with texting.

by Master_Net 1 week ago

I feel you mate, I feel you.

by Accurate_End_3710 1 week ago

If you can't get what you're trying to say out via text then you're just bad at communicating

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't like texting because it worsens the quality of relationships. I don't want to deal with someone who thinks a catching up is so beneath them or cries that they'd have to hold a phone. People are babies these days about what used to be normal social skills.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

On the other hand, when I get a phone call, it seems that my attention is needed right that moment. When I answer and it's a question that could have waited an hour, or just to chat, I feel very frustrated. But if I don't answer, I often get hit with, "What was so important that you couldn't take my call?" Well, maybe nothing! I may have just been reading a book and wanted to keep reading my book. And when I give that honest answer, I get accused of not valuing the person and being rude to them. Phone calls often end up giving me the impression like the caller feels entitled to my time on their schedule. And I mean, if you hate waiting for a response, how do you handle waiting for someone to be available to take your call?

by Deep-Software-7551 1 week ago

You can send voice messages mate

by Financial-Fly-9167 1 week ago

I always misunderstand audio messages especially if an accent and misinterpret. I like having a text record to refer to as well since ADHD.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Agree. I'm an old man millennial though.

by cartwrightcassi 1 week ago

I have ADHD and related audio processing issues. A phone call is a wonderful way for me to miss/forget important details. I hate calls.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

To be completely honest this isn't unpopular, most people I know (20btw) prefer calling, i love calling my friends and i know lots of others who love facetiming, calling.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

All I have to say is the youngest generation definitely doesn't know what phone books are. At least not mostly. I'll leave it at that.

by Kaleigh80 1 week ago

You're not the only one and I'm in my 20s too. Smh would rather chat on the phone as it's more efficient at least to me. The only thing good with texting/DMs are the memes/gifs you can share at the same time.

by Beckerhank 1 week ago

I don't reply unless I have to on text or we can call later, I don't like how quick it is and I'd rather be personable or have the other be personable in my ear rather than "ya" "k" "idk" What don't you know? Just don't reply if you can't, no worries.
