+25 People who only like egg whites shouldn't buy eggs, only liquid egg whites. amirite?

by Illustrious-Assist 1 month ago

That's brilliant 👌

by Illustrious-Assist 1 month ago

I agree on the waste part but in some countries you can't find egg whites so easily. I couldn't or I'd have to go to some professional pastry shops

by MathOpposite 1 month ago

If I need fresh egg whites, I make flan with the yolks. Or I freeze them for later use in a frittata, French toast, baking, etc...

by Anonymous 1 month ago

That's justifiable. This is more about people who throw the yolk away.

by Illustrious-Assist 1 month ago

Or I can just buy eggs? Food waste is a part of cooking. It's going to happen. It's nice to try to reduce the amount of food waste, but liquid eggs are much worse for the environment (and the wallet) than just separating eggs. (Plus I usually give the yolks to my dogs. They appreciate it.)

by BoxNo 1 month ago

Food waste is a part of cooking Actually doing maximum to reduce waste and economizing is hugely important part of good cooking.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah, that was a really weird thing for them to say. Why does stock even exist? Because people started boiling the remnant meat off bones in order to avoid wasting it. French Toast was invented as a way to use bread that had gone stale. Good restaurants run chef's specials on a daily basis to use up whatever leftover product they have on hand. Good cooking finds ways to use every single bit of food, as much as possible.

Especially with eggs since a lot of recipes require only the white or the yolk

by TruckPuzzleheaded 1 month ago

Ysk that the yolk is the healthier part of the egg.

by Repulsive-Ad-4222 1 month ago

That's cool, but egg yolk doesn't exactly accomplish the same thing as egg white does for cocktail foam or sour mix. Also a full-yolk macaroon would be weird

by Justen13 1 month ago

Just freeze them and make egg yolk noodles later or something.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Usually we do Cabonara before or after making something that requires whites.

by Justen13 1 month ago

Oh sure, but many people make egg white omelettes under the impression that they're healthier.

by Repulsive-Ad-4222 1 month ago

If you're trying to lose weight then egg white omelettes are the best option

by Anonymous 1 month ago

That's not true. Weight management is a simple matter of caloric intake. It doesn't matter what the source of calories is.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Why? Yolks are more nutrient dense, and fat isn't bad for you. Really, a whole egg is like 90 calories. You're not saving that much by not eating the yolk.

by Repulsive-Ad-4222 1 month ago

52 calories in the yolk, 15 in the white. Pretty significant difference if you're cutting

by Justen13 1 month ago

I am a volume eater, and I can eat a lot of egg whites for the same caloric number of egg yolks. I feel full from having a filled stomach, not a satiated stomach.

by Several-Nail-7175 1 month ago

Fair enough

by Repulsive-Ad-4222 1 month ago

Maybe healthier, but also where ALL the cholesterol is...

by AdOtherwise 1 month ago

There's actually not been found to be a huge correlation between dietary cholesterol intake and blood cholesterol levels, but if your doctor has told you to avoid egg yolks, by all means listen to your doctor.

by Repulsive-Ad-4222 1 month ago

Then don't buy it at all if liquid eggs aren't even a good solution. And egg yolks aren't wasted as a normal "process of cooking." They're wasted because someone with pre-determined knowledge of their disdain of it buys it anyway to waste later. Imagine purchasing something just to throw half of it away. Couldn't be me.

by Illustrious-Assist 1 month ago

nah, people can do what they want. they paid for the eggs, it's their choice how they want to handle them

by Calirempel 1 month ago

That mentality of "they paid for it so they can do what they want" is precisely what's wrong.

by Illustrious-Assist 1 month ago

nope! if someone purchases a product they have full license to do whatever they want with it so long as they are not actively harming others

by Calirempel 1 month ago

Passively harming others is also unethical and food waste is, on its best day, passive harm.

by blandasheila 1 month ago

You can't tell people what to do lol. People can buy eggs if they want.

by jbins 1 month ago

if your concern is food waste/environmental, what about the gas, packing and shipping materials, and energy required for the separation process for the liquid egg whites?

by Eastern-Proposal-759 1 month ago

This all adds to repurposing food that could be waste. Why not collect the yolks and make homemade pasta? Just spit balling but you could do stuff with those yolks just like others who feed them to the dogs. My brother was the same way only eating whites, we bought the cartons. But still if I am broke that pickiness goes out the window.

by AdPristine6646 1 month ago

Unless you're making 2-3 eggs daily, you probably are gonna waste more with boxed Egg Whites over standard eggs. US Grade A eggs last a loooooong time. I think it's something like minimum 30 days past the date.

by Justen13 1 month ago

Then perhaps it's not worth buying any eggs.

by Illustrious-Assist 1 month ago

Nah, I'ma just buy eggs🤷‍♀️

by jbins 1 month ago

Hey, at least you're honest about gratuitously wasting food.

by Illustrious-Assist 1 month ago

If you saw the amount of food they toss at grocery stores you would be disgusted if you're worried about some influencers dozen yolks

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Have also tried some recipes with pre-separated egg whites. Doesn't work the same at all, there's a distinct taste to the packaged ones.

by Justen13 1 month ago

If you're offended by a non-insulting response, then I don't know what to tell you.

by Illustrious-Assist 1 month ago

How is it a waste of food? The egg is bought and paid for either way, and virtually every food has a part that we throw away. Also, as someone who has cooked a lot of macarons, liquid egg whites do NOT perform the same as whole egg whites.

by Ok-Occasion-512 1 month ago

Any suggestions for someone that likes yolks and uses them a lot, but doesn't like to eat the whites? Yolks are so good in homemade pasta but what do you even do with egg whites. You can make deserts but I don't eat a lot of sugar

by sdaniel 1 month ago

Pretty sure you can get beaten yolks in the same liquid format as whites. Could be regional dk

by cruickshankchel 1 month ago

Eggs are one of my favorite things to have for breakfast, yet I've never liked egg yolks and have always thrown them away. It will bring me great joy to think about how annoyed this makes you when I make my eggs tomorrow.

by Paulamuller 1 month ago

Guilt tripping for wasting food when that's not really a world problem, are we back in the 80s/90s?

by schaeferalexane 1 month ago

"That's not a world problem" - wasting food is always a problem. The fact that you want to wash it out as not being significant is pretty intellectually dishonest.

by Illustrious-Assist 1 month ago

Ok please realistically explain to me how an individual, you and me, not corporations wasting food in your example creates a systematic world problem. Break down the global geopolitics at play because I'm too ignorant to understand.

by schaeferalexane 1 month ago

He won't, he'll just smugly tell you to not buy eggs if you don't want to eat the yolk. Broken record. Ask him to elaborate and he just parrots the original message again

by Top_Tree216 1 month ago

I meen... it just gets taken to a wastewater treatment plant (if they throw it down the drain) where it gets converted into methane gas by anaerobic digestion and converted into electrical power. So if they are throwing it away at least put it down the drain. (U.S example, not sure how its done for other nations)

by Savings_Storage7677 1 month ago

Again, masking this as a non-global problem (as someone else did above), doesn't really make it justifiable does it? what difference does that make in the end? It means three perfectly fine yolks were thrown down the drain for no reason. For a taste preference alone, it's really just a waste.

The yolk is better for you.
