+773 If aliens really wanted to take over the Earth, they wouldn't need to come down and laser-nuke all the major cities. They wouldn't have to replace the most powerful leaders or disable all our militaries. All they'd need to do is sow seeds of discord until we were too weak to face them, and then waltz into power. It's a good thing we all get along or else we might just be destroyed, amirite?

Except... We don't all get along.

I loved the Twilight Zone on this.

The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices - to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and a thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own for the children... and the children yet unborn. And the pity of this is... that these things cannot be confined to... The Twilight Zone!!!

And yet another thing to add to my list of paranoia.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Along with Anatidaephobia, the fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This is my paranoia: you know how some stars are really giant? and some planets on said stars must be really giant? well somewhere, there's some ancient alien race that is just MASSIVE, like one alien is as large as a skyscraper, and they're ships are so huge that if they were to go through earth, it would just crush it- think bug on a windshield. call me stupid, but let's be honest: we don't know shit about what's out there.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Dude, what if there's a race that is so massive that our solar system ran into their planet and our planet is important to one of their countries or something? What if there were wars over the wet rock and we didn't know and were just sitting here like "derp?"

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I always thought of our solar system as only a grain or atom in another one that managed to be undisturbed (like it was in an underground tunnel)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It sucks that a post this good will probably never get the recognition it deserves.

How can you be so sure? Just you wait; this post will go far. It's brilliant and stuff.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Poor you; it's a great post.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Can someone dumb this down so i understand it?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Nevermind, i kinda get it. But like, what if we are just over-estimating the aliens intelligence? They could be as dumb as us

by Anonymous 12 years ago

To get here from the nearest star (alpha centauri), which is 4.24 light years away, they'd have to be smarter than us.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(Your+name+(optional)): Not necessarily... one, they don't necessarily need to be from the nearest star; two, they may have a propensity to travel through space; three, smartness is all relative and lastly, them having technology for space travel may not necessarily equate to having better weapons technology, the whole idea of war and hate may be completely unheard of to them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

First, since we are aware that there are no intelligent life forms in our solar system (besides us), if aliens came from somewhere, they'd at least have to be as far away as the nearest star. Second, it wouldn't make sense for them to just randomly travel around space, they need a means of doing so. Third, smartness is relative, but in this case it is relative to humanity as a whole, so they are either smarter than us, or not. Lastly, the post were if they were trying to take over the world, and them NOT using weapons, which is what you mentioned. The aliens would know war if they are trying to conquer us.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(Your+name+(optional)): Maybe these aliens don't have the traditional signs of "life forms" as we know it, for all we know they could be rocks... with that being said, we may have already encountered aliens and just not noticed it. In response to your second response, I don't really understand what your point is, are you saying they need a reason to go or are you saying they need something they use to travel with? If it's the former then exploration, just to see what's out there, vacation, maybe to get to some other place and they stop by on Earth, it could be anything really, but not necessarily conquest. And if it's the latter then maybe they don't need what we need to breathe or any of the stuff that allows us to travel through space. Yes, but as I said earlier smarter than us at travel doesn't mean smarter than us at weapons (or war strategizing), even after we have weakened ourselves, we might still be able to take them on. Lastly, I was responding to your comment, not op

by Anonymous 12 years ago

1) There may be undiscovered life forms, but they are probably not in this solar system, and they would need a certain amount of intelligence to come here (even with space resistance, they still need to get to Earth), so some bacteria or a rock organism wouldn't have he capability. 2) And my second point was the latter, they could be completely immune to the things that would kill us in space (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tardigrade, 4th paragraph), but they still need to come up with a method of coming here. Even Mars is about 35 million miles away, so they can't just float in our direction. 3) If they came to Earth to destroy us, then they would at least have some means to do so. If they came just to explore, why would they want to kill us, and why would we want to kill them? 4) You brought up the subject of war, which was in the post. I had only mentioned the intelligence of the aliens coming to Earth.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(Your+name+(optional)): If these aliens are as smart as we think they may be, then they probably have stealth technology much better than ours, so the rocks that we see may just be a guise. I'm not saying they are literally earth rocks. 2. Pretty cool link, I've never heard of them. Anyways, I'm not saying that they're going to float here. They can still have the technology, it just doesn't need all the commodities that we need. What if they just jumped onto a comet and rode it like a cowboy? I mean I can't say how they'll do it, but I can say that if aliens are out there, they probably don't have the same limits that we do. Did I say that they wanted to kill us? I just said that having better travel technology doesn't mean better weapons. I also said they might be peaceful.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That might be true, but why hide from us? And how? To the point of them getting here by accident or without technology, I guess that is possible (that happened on Earth with Madagascar and Hawaii, with random chance events). But the chances of that happening are so slim I wouldn't even count it as a practical way. Even if it did, there probably wouldn't be large enough numbers, or survive the experience, so no Earth invasion would happen (so you are right in that regard, but I still don't think it is remotely probable). So basically, if they reached Earth by accidental or by certain characteristics, they probably would not be capable of destroying Earth. If they use technology, if they are peaceful, then it doesn't matter if they want to kill us, and if they are not, then they will probably be smarter than us because their technology is already far superior to our own. (And tardigrades are awesome)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(Your+name+(optional)): What if their most "destructive" technology is just a joke to us? Something else I wonder. If they are from a far away place, then the weapons they use against each other will probably be different than the weapons they'd use against us. Unless these aliens take a long time to study us and learn about our weaknesses, without us sensing their presence (anything's possible), unless they do that then they will probably not have the tools they'd need to actually do harm to us. Or maybe they know what happens when people die and they actually want to avoid killing us. What if in order to defeat us, the only thing they had to do was make us live longer? Those are just some of the things that go through my head, it probably doesn't have anything to do with the post

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Instead of aliens blowing the heck out of us like in movies, they just need to quietly turn everyone against each other until there is a huge war. After all the destruction we have caused on ourselves, they can just take over Earth with little resistance.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I've always pictured aliens looking at Earth and laughing their asses off at us because were at war with ourselves.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They're 'LTAO'. (inb4downvoted)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This could be happening right now....and we wont ever know.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sometimes when I get really deep in thought about this space and universe stuff, I like to imagine that god sometimes gets bored or just needs a break from the whiny bitches down on earth, and picks a random planet out there somewhere just to mess with. Like put some people on there and screw with their lives. Kinda like a giant sims game.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

For a while I sat wondering why I didn't like this post, I mean it is pointing out something true. Was it the idea that there may be something more powerful than us out there? Or was it that realizing that we aren't as smart as we see ourselves? It could even be the fact that IF aliens are out there and they happen to be more intelligent than us, it's sad that all our hard work and vigor could so easily be undone by our own ignorance and hate... and then it hit me! I realized why I didn't like this post, it's because of the idea that if aliens existed that there is a chance that they may be like us... I mean that'd really suck, if aliens did exist, I'd hope that they're peaceful creatures and that seeing us like this would only inspire them to help us improve instead of trying to conquer an already weak planet.
